Having a home creates a stable environment for holding a job. Having a stable job helps keep a roof over your head. As our community experiences fewer and fewer affordable places to live, it’s important that we work to address the growing homeless population and the issues that are causing it. As a Realtor, these are things I think about.

When I see a homeless person on the side of the road, I’m reminded how blessed I am to have a roof over my head. I’m thankful that I don’t have to worry about going hungry because I can’t afford a decent meal. I appreciate that I have a (relatively) stable job and stable income. (Your referrals and support definitely help on that front.) While I certainly work very hard for what I have, I also recognize that I’ve had opportunities that others have not had.

I also know that my business, being commission based, could disappear at any time. I’m constantly searching for a job; the job of being your Realtor! And, if I don’t find enough people to hire me, before long, I could be one of those homeless people. I could be someone in need of help. I know many successful agents who’ve spent time being homeless. So, in times of success, I find it important to give back.

There are numerous organizations that I support. And two that mean the most to me address the systemic issues that cause poverty and homelessness. They are Open Door Ministries and Community Works.

Open Door Ministries exists to provide practical help and hope for people in urban Denver who are homeless or low income. Their primary objective is to move people towards self-sufficiency by helping change the circumstances and life patterns that have held them captive to poverty and addictions. Through 18 distinct programs, they focus on tangible needs like food, shelter, access to education and employment training, as well as intangible needs such as friendship, hope, and spiritual guidance. Visit www.odmdenver.org for more information.

CommunityWorks empowers the unemployed and those with barriers to employment to become self-supporting through job preparation and placement. Their vision is to see all job seekers in our community employed and fulfilling their God-given design. They serve any entry-level job seeker ages 17 & up, with an emphasis on low-income individuals who have barriers to employment. They help through Career Preparation Workshops, Soft Skills Training, Job Placement Services, Resume Preparation, Computer Lab, Pathways to Hard Skills Training, and Support Services such as their professional clothing closets. Ultimately, they seek to tackle poverty in a way that works. Visit www.commwrks.org for more information.

Both of these organizations serve the community in ways that we couldn’t do by ourselves. They change people’s lives. And so we support them here at Urban Pro Homes. We trust that by creating awareness around their mission it will inspire others to give. And we are able to give directly to them because of your support of our team!

Is there an organization or cause that you’re passionate about? Who do you support through your time, money, and gifts? Tell us about it. I’d love to hear more!
